The
Commission for Justice and Peace across the world is committed to helping
people who are at risk of being deprived of their rights, especially human
rights defenders. We issue intervention letters to the competent authorities of
countries from which we receive reports of persecutions, threats or arbitrary
arrests of people who engage in activities for the defence of their own human
rights or those of others. Information about such cases is provided to us for
example by our sister commissions, the Asian Center for the Progress of Peoples
in Hong Kong, the ACAT and above all by Amnesty International. The intervention
letters are also forwarded to the diplomatic mission of the respective country
in the Federal Republic as well as to the German embassy in the respective
country for their information. These Urgent Actions are not only a source of
encouragement for people in distress, they sometimes also contribute to improve
the detention conditions of prisoners, to pave the way for retrials or even the
release of a person.
